Ikea Hack: Spotan

 In My Favorite Crafty Things

Translation. Cheap metal board from Ikea, made better by fabric.  But what isn’t made better by fabric.

Cheap metal magnet board from Ikea called the Spontan.

These two prints are by far, two of my all time favourite fabrics. I buy more of them, every time I see them so I never run out.  You might recognized one from Ruby’s first day of school dress. It’s called “Children at Play on Parade” by Michael Miller.

My other favourite fabric is  “Let’s Pretend” by Michael Miller, available at myfabricspot.com (Canadian online fabric retailer…she has great modern stuff!)

Let’s Pretend by Michael Miller fat quarter bundles available at www.myfabricspot.com

Since making cute summer dresses isn’t really in the forecast right now, I decided to add the fabric to the boring metal magnet boards and add them it to the kids playroom craft area, which is just off my craft room. So, I made one for myself too.

Got 20 minutes? Here’s how to do it.

Take a cheap Spontan board from Ikea and cover it with fabric. Perfect magnet board for craft space.

SUPPLIES

  • *A can of spray adhesive.
  • *18×36′ of fabric
  • *Rotary Cutter & Mat
  • *Measuring tape

Instructions:

  1. To completely cover the Spotan board you’ll need to cut a 18×36″ piece of fabric. If you don’t have a cutting mat and rotary cutter, just use scissors since the cuts won’t show.
  2. Smooth out surface so fabric is flat, centred and no wrinkles.
  3. Turn over the Spontan board and spray the adhesive along the back edges and tuck fabric in.
  4. Snip a hole in the back corners of the fabric so you can hang the new and improved Spontan on the wall.

Four Easy steps to transform the Spontan into a cute custom magnet board.

That’s it. Easy as pie.

Spray the adhesive to the board and lay your fabric on top. Carefully smoothing it out by hand so you don’t have any wrinkles. TIP* you might want to put some newspaper down. I didn’t and everything on my cutting table has been tacky ever since, and is now slowly getting furrier, as dust and fabric fibres are sticking to everything!

Kids Craft area. The revamped Spontan Magnet board is now covered with artwork!

Looks so much more playful than just a regular metal magnet board, and now this beautiful fabric is always on display!
